Slate Turns Up the Noise in New York with New Menu

A New York bar filled with music, big screen sports, countless games and a fully loaded bar might not have to worry about the food it serves. But, one buzzing joint in the Flatiron District redesigned its menu beyond just typical bar fair.

A two-story affair that fires for dinner and stays open until bar time,  Slate offers a full outdoor bar upstairs, as well as a club-style dance floor, dining tables and big screen televisions. Downstairs, games rule the floor with billiards, ping pong, video games, cards, board games, darts and oversized chess. It’s essentially an adult’s playground with emphasis on “play” and not “adult.”

With all that going on, the folks behind Slate probably didn’t have to worry about the food coming out of the kitchen. But, they evidently wanted to up their own game to proper New York standards.

There are more traditional items like a Jumbo New York Pretzel or Deviled Eggs, but opt instead for the Mac n’ Cheese Spring Rolls, Braised Short Rib Tacos or the Cheesesteak Beignets. Any of the above is tasty enough to drag you away from the Eight Ball.

Slate is not a joint for you to visit, kick back, sip a drink and enjoy conversation with a date or with your buddies. It’s far too kinetic, energized and loud. That’s not a criticism. That’s just its nature. Instead, the place is perfect for blowing off steam after work or to gather for a playful birthday gathering with friends. It doesn’t want to be serious. It just wants all to have a good time — while sampling food worth coming for on its own.
