There are very modern, posh hotels in Scotland. Somehow, Loch Lomond doesn’t feel like a spot where one might belong. Instead, stately accommodations like Cameron House fit the scene much better.
Owned and operated by De Vere, Cameron House sits on the banks of the loch, decorated exclusively in the rugged, wood lined and warmly lit themes of a mountain hunting lodge.
From the moment you step into the lobby, you’re met with mounted game and the walls and a collection of long walking sticks for long treks through the wilderness.
However, that very masculine ambiance shouldn’t be mistaken for a lack of luxury. The rooms are classically and sophisticated, well appointed with quality beds and furniture worthy of an upperclass drawing room.
Fortunately, that luxury is never buried under layers of pretension. There’s very little about Scottish culture that’s pretentious or exclusive, and that welcoming attitude runs throughout the property (perhaps in a more soft-spoken manner than it might in Glasgow).

Its dining and lounge areas, from the expansive and formal Cameron Grill to the inviting Claret Jug bar, are classy, yet accessible. Prices remain manageable, but you’ll have to expect some decent tabs at a venue of this quality.
From the Cameron House, visitors can enjoy everything from golf and hiking to seaplane sightseeing tours and trap shooting.
The only concern I had while visiting the Loch Lomond property was that a modernizing philosophy seems to be taking hold in an effort to update the property — to make it somehow hip. For example, there’s an infinity pool on the property that seems more at home in LA. And, the indoor pool is built into a small scale water park that feels out of place.
While I understand that the property has to compete with other area hotels and must remain relevant, this reporter wouldn’t want to see the atmospheric, masculine elegance of Cameron House give way to kitschy attractions.
Fortunately, that hasn’t happened to too great an extent so far. There’s still no finer place to stay on the Loch than Cameron House.
