Slim Pickings For Aussie Smartwatch Fans

Google is banking on the Smartwatch becoming the first massive trend in wearable smart devices, but the release of three new Android Wear supporting smartwatches don’t appear anywhere near hitting Australian shelves.

Samsung, LG and Motorola were headliners overnight at the Google-organised I/O annual developers conference in San Francisco with smartwatch releases developed for new Google software Android Wear.

Aimed at representing a simpler, more immediate way of staying connected, the smartwatch range across the Google wearable platform features a few basic common features, namely email, text and voice operated search capability.

Samsung’s Gear Live and LG’s G Watch are both now available for purchase in as many as 12 countries and will hit 27 international retailers early next month. But Australian customers looking to get in on the latest tech evolution are poised for disappointment.

Of the three smartwatches, just the G Watch is available for Australian pre-order purchase from July 4. The LG product will set you back $249, plus an additional $19.95 for shipping.

Both Samsung and LG are light on details of their Australian launches and have not been able to confirm release dates according to Cnet. Motorola’s Moto 360 is the only smartwatch to feature a round design but appears even further behind its competitors, declaring the company has “nothing to announce about the Moto 360 in Australia just yet”.

LG released a similarly vague statement via Facebook on Thursday evening.

“The LG G Watch will be one of the first wearable devices in Australia to feature Google’s Android Wear™ software and will be available from selected Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone Australia online and retail stores,” the company said in a statement, choosing not to respond to comments requesting additional date and price information.
