Beyond the Gates’ impressive start to life hasn’t come without cost, following the unexpected exit of Maurice Johnson from the setup. CBS’ latest soap drama made its small-screen debut in February 2025, introducing viewers to a hoard of sympathetic characters, including Johnson’s Ted Richardson. Nevertheless, just one month after his first appearance on the series, BTG confirmed the departure of the Chicago Fire alum and announced Keith D. Robinson as his replacement.
With CBS not providing any context behind Maurice Johnson’s exit, Beyond the Gates fans have come up with speculations of their own, with many suggesting that a rift with his on-screen wife, Daphnée Duplaix, was the reason. In response, the seasoned television personality has addressed these theories and has outright denied the existence of any conflict.
What did Maurice Johnson say about not getting along with Daphnée Duplaix in Beyond the Gates?
On March 25, Maurice Johnson took to Threads to respond to an article suggesting that he was leaving his Beyond the Gates role of Ted Richardson due to issues with co-star Daphnée Duplaix. The actor debunked the report by writing, “From the horse’s mouth…neither are true, so whoever [this author] is didn’t get this from CBS or my co-star. Please don’t spread BS that someone pulled out of the air.”
He then highlighted the importance of responsible journalism in a subsequent reply, noting, “The chemistry on screen reflects a lot, and it’s definitely not problems,” he continued in another post. “I’m just perplexed as to how one would automatically assume [a] professional, educated actor has on-set problems with the person who plays their spouse day in and day out. This is the problem when people want to be first and report something and start a whole narrative themselves. Wait and verify before reposting. I don’t know [this author] and out of all the interviews I’ve done, this wasn’t one.”
Contrary to the aforementioned speculations, Maurice Johnson has publically expressed affection towards his Beyond the Gates cast mates post his exit. “From top to bottom of the call sheet it’s been a pleasure making history and magic with this cast! Many have become family and that’s what I enjoy the most about each tv or movie that I do!” the actor conveyed in an X (formerly Twitter) post.
