Season 3 Episode 3 of Dark Winds, titled “Chiidii (Ghosts),” has teased a link between Bernadette, Chee, and Leaphorn’s cases. Accordingly, fans of the crime-drama series are wondering what exactly this link is. Season 3 showed Leaphorn and Chee investigating the disappearance and murder of a Navajo boy. Meanwhile, Bernadette finds herself pursuing a conspiracy related to human and drug smuggling.
Here are all the details.
Here’s how Bernadette links with Chee and Leaphorn’s case in Dark Winds Season 3
Bernadette, Chee, and Leaphorn’s cases are seemingly connected via a common link — a suspicious group of farmers.
In Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 3, Chee and Leaphorn find a lead in their investigation of Ernesto Cata’s murder. This led them to a red truck, first shown in the season premiere. The duo soon encountered a group of shady farmers, who eventually fled the premises when Chee and Leaphorn returned the next day to investigate. However, Chee soon found something crucial in the farmers’ compound related to Bernadette.
Chee found a corkboard with pictures of Border Patrol agents, including Bernadette. However, it’s unclear why the farmers had the pictures in their possession.
It’s possible that these farmers could be responsible for or are involved in Ernesto Cata’s murder and are likely affiliated with Bernadette’s main investigative target, Tom Spenser, who is a suspect in human trafficking. These farmers are likely working for Spenser. This explains why they have pictures of Bernadette and other Border Patrol agents. This is likely because the farmers must know the authorities they must evade while smuggling.
Furthermore, Suzanne mentioned that Halsey took out the red truck, and Leaphorn and Chee found and encountered the farmers nearby, the same night Ernesto disappeared. This truck was also spotted near the pool of blood the latter two came across.
Thus, if the farmers killed Ernesto, and they are presumably involved with Spenser, then the latter could be the one who actually killed Ernesto. As such, Bernadette’s investigation of Spenser would prove invaluable to Leaphorn and Chee, who could finally learn how and why Ernesto was killed.
