Pop icons Rihanna and Katy Perry have maintained a close friendship spanning over a decade. Their relationship began in 2009 when they bonded over a Valentino handbag. Later, the celebrity duo became each other’s confidante during challenging personal periods.

Rihanna and Katy Perry’s friendship started almost a decade and a half ago. The “Teenage Dreams” star shared that she complimented Rihanna’s sparkly Valentino purse in 2009. Upon knowing Perry liked it, Rihanna promised to send the same one as a gift. Perry Told Elle magazine, “I was like, ‘Oh great, here’s one of those tricks who talks fast friends but never lives up to it.”
But RiRi proved her wrong. Perry recalled, “Valentine’s Day came around, and I got a little Valentino bag in the mail from her. I thought, ‘Wow, this is a woman of her word'” (via Page Six).
Rihanna also gushed over Perry’s straightforwardness in the Elle magazine interview. She shared, “I’ll tell you, you do not find people like her in this industry. She’s gorgeous, charming, and so unedited it’s scary. That’s what intrigued me most when I first met her: She said it like she saw it. I trust people like that.”
In 2012, when Perry was processing her divorce from Russell Brand, Rihanna, again, became her comfort person. A source told Mirror, “Rihanna has been there for Katy, texting her from Miami, where she’s on holiday. Now they are planning a girly getaway so Katy can clear her head.”
However, there have been rumors of Rihanna and Katy Perry’s potential fall out a few times in between. Perry was apparently left out of Rihanna’s Met Gala afterparty at Up&Down in 2018. While many wondered what could be the reason, a source told The Sun, “Because Rihanna was chairing the Met Gala, she had to pose with a lot of the celebrity guests, but it was really uncomfortable when she was asked to have the photo with Katy.”
The rumored fall out didn’t last too long. Perry expressed her excitement over Rihanna being a new mom in 2020. The singer talked about Rihanna during an interaction with E! News on the American Idol Season 20 finale red carpet, saying she’s “so happy for her.”
