Moana 2 is now streaming on Disney+, and fans who couldn’t catch the film in theaters now have a chance to experience the magical world of Moana. A sequel to the 2016 blockbuster film of the same name, it explores the journey of the titular character in Oceania after she receives a shocking call from her ancestors. Fans have a major question now: why does Moana get new tattoos?
Here’s what Moana’s new tattoos mean in Moana 2
Moana gets new tattoos at the end of Moana 2 as she becomes a demi-god (via The Direct). In the film, Moana and Maui are on a quest to find Motefetu Island. However, their journey takes a tragic turn with Moana’s life in danger.
The moment she breaks the curse after touching the island shore, the young girl is struck by Nalo’s dangerous lightning. The lightning ends up taking her life and Maui soon finds her dead body.
However, a twist in the tale follows when Maui begins reciting a chant to bring back Moana from the dead. The chant helps Moana’s ancestors including Gramma Tala to revive her. As a result, Moana is alive again and another magical twist takes place leaving viewers surprised.
She finds a magical tattoo on her hand. The tattoo depicts the beautiful scenery of Motefetu Island. It showcases its mountains and the enchanting stars above it. Moana got the tattoo after she successfully accomplished her mission and even narrowly escaped death.
Apart from this, the tattoo explains that Moana has now become a demi-god. In the first movie, Maui revealed that he got his demigod tattoos because of the good things he’s done. As such, Moana got the same by her good deeds. Additionally, the tattoo reflects her connection with her ancestors.
With Moana now a demi-god, fans are eager to delve deep into her character in the potential future installments of the franchise. It will be interesting to see how she uses her demi-god identity to fight back the villains.
