Here’s What Happened to Good American Family’s Natalia Grace

Curious about Natalia Grace’s story and how Good American Family portrays it? This Hulu series dives into the real-life controversy surrounding Natalia, a Ukrainian orphan with dwarfism, whose adoptive parents claimed she was an adult posing as a child. The case sparked debates over identity, legal battles, and shocking allegations from both sides.

Let’s take a closer look at who Natalia Grace is, where she is now, and the events that continue to spark debate.

The Natalia Grace controversy, explained

Natalia Grace is a Ukrainian orphan with a rare form of dwarfism, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (via PEOPLE). Michael and Kristine Barnett adopted Natalia Grace in 2010, believing she was six years old. However, in 2012, they claimed she was an adult posing as a child and legally changed her age from 8 to 22.

In Good American Family, Ellen Pompeo portrays Kristine Barnett, who, along with her husband Michael (Mark Duplass), adopts Natalia (played by Imogen Faith Reid). The series explores the allegations made by both Natalia and the Barnetts, including claims of abuse and deception. It follows real-life events as the Barnetts moved Natalia into an apartment alone, which led to criminal charges that the court later dismissed.

Natalia Grace began living with the Mans family in 2013 after Cynthia and Antwon Mans took her in. In 2016, they filed for guardianship, but a judge ruled her a legal adult and dismissed the petition. Despite the ruling, Natalia stayed with the Mans family, and they officially adopted her in 2023 (via Time).

However, the final episode of The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: Natalia Speaks revealed a dispute between Natalia and the Mans. In a recorded phone call, Antwon and Cynthia accused Natalia of lying about them, with Antwon stating, “Something ain’t right with Natalia” and that, “We’re done with her” (via PEOPLE).

Natalia now resides with the DePaul family, friends who had previously attempted to adopt her. In a 2025 interview with PEOPLE, she shared that she’s preparing for GED and learning to drive as she looks forward to lead an independent life.
