The Electric State: What Happens to Herman?

Herman, the robot from The Electric State, isn’t just another mechanical sidekick but also a character viewers come to love. Voiced by Anthony Mackie, Herman tags along with Keats (Chris Pratt) and Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) on a high-stakes mission. The Electric State, a sci-fi adventure directed by the Russo Brothers, is currently streaming on Netflix. It takes viewers on a thrilling journey through a post-apocalyptic world where humans and robots seem to coexist uneasily. The twist? A search for a long-lost brother.

But as the Netflix film reaches its climax, the audience is left asking: does Herman make it out alive? Here are all the details.

Herman’s fate in The Electric State, explained

Technically, Herman doesn’t die in The Electric State but changes form.

During the final battle against Stanley Tucci’s villainous character, Ethan Skate, Herman makes a heroic sacrifice. As Skate unleashes an army of drones, Herman jumps in front of Keats, shielding him from incoming gunfire. The act of bravery leaves Herman severely damaged, and he collapses, seemingly lifeless.

For a moment, it appears Herman died in The Electric State, and the emotional weight of the scene is amplified by Keats. Believing his trustworthy sidekick died, Keats gives a heartfelt monologue to express his deep affection for Herman. Just as the audience and the characters start to mourn, Herman’s LED face flickers to life, showcasing a smaller, miniature version of the robot hidden within.

It turns out Herman wasn’t dead after all. He had simply transitioned into his “eight-inch model,” a smaller form used for finer repairs. In a moment of levity, Herman also jokes about Keats’ “eight-inch model” and never having seen it. He then jumps onto his shoulder and joins the fight once more. By the end of The Electric State, Herman reunites with Michelle and Keats, helping to expose Skate’s fraudulent Neurocaster technology.
