Mariah Carey Comment on ‘Bad Lighting’ at iHeartRadio Awards Goes Viral

Mariah Carey recently attended the iHeartRadio Awards, where she took the stage to accept the Icon Award. While on stage, Carey expressed concern about the lighting arrangement, and her reaction soon went viral online. As a result, fans have been wondering what the “All I Want for Christmas Is You” singer said about the lighting.

Here are Mariah Carey’s lighting comments explored.

What did Mariah Carey say about ‘lighting’?

While on stage to accept her Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Awards, Mariah Carey asked “Is the lighting okay?” and said she didn’t like “bad lighting.” This caused both the audience and the award presenter LL Cool J to laugh.

The production and lighting team quickly adjusted the lighting to make the stage brighter.

Carey’s comments sparked mixed reactions on social media. “Certainly, @TheManilaHotel can relate to @MariahCarey’s fascination for good lighting,” one fan wrote on X (Twitter).

“When you’re not pretty, you complain about lighting,” another fan added.

One fan page, however, expressed respect for Carey’s professionalism when doing lighting checks.

Carey then asked the audience if they “liked the ensemble?” before twirling around on stage, causing fans to cheer loudly for her. She then said “ensemble” but this time with the “e” at the end being pronounced instead of being silent, jokingly apologizing.

The 55-year-old musician then started her speech, thanking iHeartRadioAwards for awarding her the Icon Award, calling it an “incredible honor.” She then thanked Muni Long and Tori Kelly for their performances at the event. Long and Kelly had performed a medley inspired by the artist. Carey also thanked LL for his “kind words,” referring to the speech the latter gave about the former before bringing her on stage, where he highlighted all of her accomplishments.

Carey then spoke of how, when she was young, she would listen to her favorite artists on the radio and dream of being on “airwaves.” She then told those unaware of the “airwave” terminology that it was the “non-WiFi of streaming.”

The musician then thanked John Sykes, telling the audience that he was her first manager. She noted how people believed her manager was “this other guy,” alluding to her ex-husband Tommy Mottola. She also thanked the DJs and interns of the radio stations where she would arrive at 7:00 AM. Further, she jokingly remarked that it wasn’t her “ideal wake-up time.”
