For the past few episodes, Coach Ben has been mentally and physically deteriorating. He is deeply disturbed by his Achilles tendon cut and even refuses to eat anything. Further, his condition takes a terrifying turn when he wishes to die while the girls don’t let him take this drastic step. He repeatedly begs Natalie to end his suffering, believing that death is his only escape.
In episode 6, Natalie is shown bringing food to Ben, who is locked in the animal pen. During her visits, Ben repeatedly asks her to end his life, suggesting various methods. He offers her a knife to keep her hands clean or a gun for a quick and painless death. However, she ignores his pleas and insists that he eat his meals. She states, “There’s no way that I’m taking away their hope of going home, or your hope of going home.”
Further, he even confesses that he burned down the cabin but she refuses to believe him. Ben’s health continues to deteriorate due to starvation and as a result, the group except Natalie and Akilah decide to force-feed him. They force the food through a tube connected to the funnel.
At night, Natalie shows up at the pen with a knife and decides to free Ben from his pain. Ben requests her to carry on with the deed while tears roll down Natalie’s cheeks. At last, Natalie raises her weapon and stabs Ben in his chest who takes his last breath in front of her eyes. Ben thanks her before moving toward his death and Natalie despite being emotional feels right to kill him as an act of mercy.
