Young was the lead singer of the Youngbloods, best known for their 1969 hit “Get Together.” The song was written by folk musician Dino Valenti under the pseudonym Chet Powers. Originally released in 1967, it became widely popular after being featured in a public service advertisement for the National Council of Christians and Jews. It reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. The chorus, “Come on people now, smile on your brother,” became associated with the peace and love movement of the late 1960s.

Born Perry Miller in 1941 in Queens, New York, Young grew up on Long Island. He attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, Ohio State University, and New York University before leaving to pursue music. He released two solo albums, The Soul of a City Boy (1964) and Young Blood (1965), before forming the Youngbloods with Jerry Corbitt, Lowell “Banana” Levinger, and Joe Bauer. They were the house band at Greenwich Village’s Cafe Au Go Go.

Following the Youngbloods’ breakup in 1972, Young had a solo career that lasted more than five decades. His albums included Together (1972), Song for Juli (1973), Light Shine (1974), and Love on the Wing (1977). He was also part of the 1979 No Nukes concert alongside Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor, and Jackson Browne. His last album, Dreamers (2019), featured his son, bassist Tristan Young.
