What’s up With Saw XI? Canceled Release Date Report Explained

Rumors that Saw XI, set to release on September 26, 2025, might get canceled have been doing the rounds. The upcoming sequel was announced in late December, after Saw X’s commercial success and positive critical reception. But after the disappointing update from writing partners Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, the sequel’s future remains uncertain.

So, is the popular franchise’s next installment canceled? Here are the details.

Has Saw XI really been canceled by Lionsgate?

It remains unclear whether Lionsgate has canceled Saw XI. According to reports, the movie seems to have been stalled amid internal conflicts at higher levels. Writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to provide updates on the sequel’s development. They revealed that “zero progress” has been made ever since they were onboarded back in Spring 2024 and submitted the initial draft.

Melton claimed that they haven’t got any response from the studios since May. Reflecting on internal disagreement at Lionsgate, he elaborated, “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.” Since the latest update, fans have began wondering Saw XI will happen this year.

In addition, a source told Bloody Disgusting, “It’s totally dead. It’s 100% over. Almost a year now.” The source revealed that things went downhill in January 2024, when producers started having disagreements over production.

The source also added that the production faced setbacks when one producer tried to “plow forward” with the movie, and the other caused hindrance. Lionsgate wasn’t able to resolve the disagreement, which led to stagnancy in production.

Previously, after announcing the latest installment, Lionsgate revealed that Kevin Greutert would be directing it. Initially, the movie was supposed to release in September 2024 but was pushed to 2025.

However, given the latest production updates, uncertainty looms over its upcoming release date. While the rumors claim that the movie is no longer happening, Lionsgate hasn’t confirmed the news.
