Why Is En Vogue Singer Dawn Robinson Living Out of Her Car?

Dawn Robinson, a founding member of the legendary R&B group En Vogue, has revealed a surprising chapter of her life: she’s been living in her car for nearly three years. What started as a necessity during the pandemic has now become a purposeful way of life for the Grammy-nominated singer.

Dawn Robinson talks about living out of her car

In a video posted on March 11, 2025, Dawn Robinson opened up about why she started living in her car. “You guys, for the past three, almost three years, I have been living in my car,” she shared with her fans.

Robinson’s decision to live in her car stemmed from a series of personal challenges. In 2020, she was living with her parents in Las Vegas, but the situation became untenable due to familial tensions. “I love my mom, but she became very angry, and a lot of her anger was taken out on me,” Robinson shared.

After leaving her parents’ home, Robinson moved to Los Angeles at the suggestion of her former manager. While he initially offered her a place to stay, the arrangement fell through, leaving her in a hotel for eight months.

The uncertainty of her living situation and the stress of relying on others took a toll, leading her to explore alternative living arrangements. She discovered the concept of “car life” and was immediately drawn to the idea.

What started as a temporary solution soon became a chosen lifestyle. “A whole community of people that live in vans, van life, car life, RV life, and I loved what I was seeing,” she recalled. “I just thought, ‘Wow, these people. I could do that, I could do this, I think.’ And I ended up in my car, and it’s been, like I said, three years.”
