Elon Musk Responds to X Outage, Calls It ‘Massive Cyberattack’

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, faced significant outages on Monday. It affected thousands of users in the US and the UK. They were unable to access the service. The disruption, which lasted for several hours, was later attributed to a “massive cyberattack” by Musk himself.

Here’s what happened and how Musk responded.

On Monday afternoon, Elon Musk took to X to address the outage, aka the widespread technical issues that plagued the platform throughout the day. In a post, Musk revealed, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved. Tracing.”

During an interview with Fox Business, Musk elaborated further, stating that the attack appeared to originate from IP addresses linked to the Ukraine region. Furthermore, he added, “But there was a massive cyber-attack to try and bring down the X system with [Internet Protocol] addresses originating in the Ukraine area.”

The outage began early Monday morning, with users first reporting issues around 5:30 a.m. ET. After a brief period of stability, another wave of disruptions hit at 9:30 a.m. ET, followed by a third spike in Twitter going down around 11 a.m. ET.

The Elon Musk’s X outages were likely caused by a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, according to Alp Toker, director of Netblocks, a cybersecurity organization specializing in monitoring internet connectivity. “The patterns we observed align with previous DDoS incidents, where a platform is flooded with traffic to overwhelm its servers,” Toker explained. He added that the outage, which lasted over six hours, was one of the longest disruptions ever recorded for X/Twitter. (Via BBC)
