Here’s Why Democrats Were Wearing Pink During Donald Trump’s Speech

Wondering why Democrats wore pink during Donald Trump’s speech? The coordinated display was a statement by the Democratic Women’s Caucus, using color as a symbol of resistance and unity. Their choice carried a deeper message about policies affecting women and families.

Let’s explore the significance of the protest, its historical context, and what it represents in the broader political landscape.

Reason why democrats were wearing pink during Trump’s speech

Many Democratic women in Congress wore bright pink during President Donald Trump’s address on March 4, 2025.

The Democratic Women’s Caucus, led by Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico, organized the protest. Fernández called pink a symbol of “power and protest” against Trump’s policies, which she argued harm women and families. “It’s time to rev up the opposition and come at Trump loud and clear,” she told Time magazine.

Before the address, the 96-member caucus gathered outside the U.S. Capitol, where Fernández declared, “Women cannot afford Trump.” She cited concerns over economic policies, health care, and safety, stating, “He costs us too much in terms of money, health, lives, and safety.” The group expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies on reproductive rights, domestic violence funding, and women’s health research. “We stand in pink and we stand in opposition,” Fernández added.

Democratic women in Congress have used symbolic clothing before. They wore white in 2017 for women’s rights and in 2024 for reproductive rights. The caucus stated, “Women must be able to access the health care they need to control their own lives and futures.” (via CBS News)

Approximately 30 Democratic women participated in the pink demonstration, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Some Democrats also wore other colors for different causes; the Congressional Black Caucus wore black, while supporters of Ukraine dressed in blue and yellow. U.S. Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois, who wore pink, stated, “This color is also a color of resistance.” (via NBC)
