As fans are aware, Smart was nominated in the female category for outstanding performance in a comedy show for her series Hacks. However, she could not make it to the event due to scheduling conflicts. During the ceremony, she was busy shooting for Hacks at a different location .
Despite her absence, the 73-year-old actress made sure to keep the audience entertained with a clip that played at the top of the event. In the video, she was seen essaying her Hack’s character, Deborah Vance, who pretends to rehearse hosting the SAGs only to find out she isn’t hosting this year.
She stated, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards. I’m your host, Deborah Vance, and then I’ll hold for a standing ovation for five or six minutes. You know, whatever they decide.”
The actress further continued, I’m so happy to be up here doing my favorite thing in the world, competing for attention with Fran Drescher, The Nanny. Thank you. No, seriously, it’s an honor to be here with so many amazing actresses — and Jamie Lee Curtis” (via PEOPLE).
However, Smart soon realized she won’t be hosting, and she is jokingly told that she hasn’t cleared her union dues in six years. She said this decision was “terrible” and that she had planned eight costume changes while Jeremy Strong had nine.
Smart went on to bag the award for outstanding female actor in a comedy series for her performance in Hacks. The presenters, Kumail Nanjiani and Molly Shannon, accepted the award on her behalf, explaining her reason for absence.
