Severance Season 2 Episode 7, titled “Chikhai Bardo,” unveils the story of Mark and Gemma before they ended up on Lumon’s severed floor. It reveals the juxtaposition of their lives before Lumon’s gloomy severed floor took over their identities.
What happens to Gemma at the end of Severance Season 2 Episode 7?
Severance S2 E7 focuses on Gemma’s story, providing a perspective for viewers who have only seen Mark’s wife — believed to be dead — as Ms. Casey on Lumon’s severed floor. As it is clear from the episode ending, Gemma did not die. Lumon had been keeping an eye on Gemma and Mark way before she ended up on the severed floor.
After Gemma’s probable miscarriage, Lumon sends her the Chikhai Bardo cards. It seems like the toll of trying IVF caused a barrier between Gemma and Mark. The couple drifts apart, and Gemma goes to Lumon. Unlike Mark, she does not leave Lumon even as an “Outie.” Lumon experiments on Gemma as a severed person in multiple rooms, including Allentown, Cairns, Dranesville, Siena, Loveland, Tumwater, Adelaide, and Wellington.
It seems like each room dictates or tries to evoke a certain emotion in severed individuals. Gemma starts to doubt Lumon’s intentions eventually. She asks Dr. Mauer if she will finally get to see Mark. The Lumon employee gives a vague answer: “Mark will benefit from the world you’re siring. Kier will take away all his pain, just as Kier has taken away yours.”
In between Gemma and Mark’s flashback and the contrasting world of Lumon’s tortures, the former tries to escape the world of Kier after hitting Dr. Mauer. But she transitions into an Innie in the elevator, and Mr. Milchick finds her in the Export Hall.
From the ending of Severance S2 E7, it is evident that Lumon’s work on Innies and Outties goes way beyond what fans had earlier imagined. It is possible that the company collects data on people and eventually manipulates them to get severed, or worse, what happened to Gemma’s fate. She becomes complete test material for Lumon and does not see the outer world after entering Lumon.
Gemma’s connection to project Cold Harbor in Severance Season 2 explained
Severance Season 2 focuses on Cold Harbor and Mark’s contribution in completing it. Previous fan theories suggested that the Cold Harbor file is Gemma’s subconscious. Innie Mark is “refining” the data to remove Gemma from Ms. Casey. But Episode 7 hinted that Cold Harbor could be just one emotion of all severed people.
So, each file in the MDR department refers to the rooms (Allentown, Cairns, Loveland, Tumwater, and more). Gemma did not enter Cold Harbor, as Mark has not started working on it. So, it seems that only after Mark refines the “data” of Cold Harbor can Ms. Casey’s transition as an Innie be complete.
