Monica Lewinsky Thinks Bill Clinton Should’ve Resigned After Affair Scandal

Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern, recently said on the Call Her Daddy podcast that Bill Clinton should have resigned after their affair became public. She also reflected on the media scrutiny she faced and its impact on young women.

Here’s what we know about her latest remarks.

Monica Lewinsky talks about Bill Clinton on Call Her Daddy podcast

Monica Lewinsky stated in an interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that the proper response from former President Bill Clinton after their affair became public would have been for him to resign.

“I think that the right way to handle a situation like that would have been to probably say it was nobody’s business and to resign,” she told host Alex Cooper. She added that Clinton could have chosen to stay in office without lying or “throwing a young person who is just starting out in the world under the bus.” (via Fox News)

Clinton admitted to the affair with Lewinsky while in office, leading to his impeachment in 1998. Lewinsky recalled how the White House and media portrayed her in the aftermath. “I was very quickly painted as a stalker, a w***e, mentally unstable, a bimbo,” she said. She also described the White House response, including Clinton’s public denial: “I did not have sexual relations with that woman.” Reflecting on this, she said, “It was gaslighting… It was devastating.”

Lewinsky noted that the treatment she received set a precedent affecting young women who came after her. “There was so much collateral damage for women of my generation to watch a young woman to be pilloried on a world stage,” she said. She has previously spoken about the power imbalance in the relationship, telling CNN in 2021, “It was wholly inappropriate as the most powerful man, my boss, 49 years old. I was 22, literally just out of college.”

Clinton has addressed the scandal in interviews and books. According to The Guardian, in his memoir Citizens, he wrote that he “wish her nothing but the best.” Lewinsky, now an anti-bullying activist, recently launched the podcast Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky.
