Here’s Why the Duolingo Owl Is ‘Dead’

Wondering why Duolingo’s beloved owl mascot is “dead”? The company’s latest announcement has taken the internet by storm, sparking curiosity and speculation. Whether one is a longtime user or just hearing the news, Duo the Owl’s fate is sure to surprise everyone.

Let’s take a closer look at Duolingo’s statement, the details surrounding Duo’s “death,” and what it all means.

Here’s what happened to Duolingo’s owl mascot

Duolingo announced on February 11, 2025, that its mascot, Duo the Owl, is dead.

The Pittsburgh-based language learning company shared the same on X(formerly Twitter). They wrote, “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.” Duolingo also stated that “authorities” are investigating the cause of death and that the company is cooperating.

The social media post included, “Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know. We are aware he had many enemies, but we kindly ask that you refrain from sharing why you hate him in the comments. If you feel inclined to share, please also include your credit card number so we can automatically sign you up for Duolingo Max in his memory.”

Moreover, the company changed its social media profile pictures and its app icon to show Duo with Xs over his eyes. Another post on Duolingo’s official X page featured a video depicting a mysterious Tesla Cybertruck hitting the mascot. “Reward for whoever can identify the driver. Please post any leads on Twitter. Thank you for your patience with us during these trying times,” read the caption.

However, a Duolingo spokesperson confirmed to CBS News Pittsburgh’s KDKA-TV that Duo’s death is part of a marketing campaign. They also advised against sharing credit card information. Duolingo has described its branding as “wholesome and unhinged,” embracing a unique tone after its mascot became an internet phenomenon.

Per CBS, the company explained in its official handbook, “Our mascot was initially designed to encourage regular practice. But once the internet got their hands on him, he grew into a more complicated — even menacing — character with his own lore. He’s still cute and cuddly. But he’s also willing to temporarily relocate your family to ensure you finish your lessons.”

Thus, it is likely that the owl mascot’s “death” is the company’s latest publicity move. Furthermore, they may reveal more details in the coming days. While Duo’s future is uncertain as of writing, he just might return in the future with a new name and design.
