In the movie, all Lainy wanted was to become a mother after losing her own at such a tender age. The movie, thus, begins at a playground, featuring Lainy as a kid playing pretend with her doll giving birth. She then tells Kate, her best friend, that they should always stay at each other’s side now that they have both lost their mothers. Eventually, we learn how much her mother’s death affected a young Lainy.
At the beginning of the movie, young Lainy tells Kate that being a mom is the greatest thing a human being can do. Later, it becomes clear that her mother’s death shaped a glorified perspective of motherhood in Lainy’s mind. That is why she made it her life’s goal to become one herself. However, her life didn’t turn out the way she expected, and becoming pregnant began to seem like an impossibility for her. When she learns that Kate is pregnant, she resorts to putting on a fake pregnancy belly.
Her fake pregnant belly drew a lot of positive attention from others, and she began loving the way people treated her. She felt as if she was more valuable now that she was going to be a mother. This led to Lainy keeping up with the deception. However, her romanticized and glorified notion of motherhood soon begins to crumble when she realizes that pregnancy is more than just flowers and rainbows. Her friendship with Megan opened her eyes to the harsh realities of pregnancy and that it is not always smooth sailing and magical. In the end, Lainy had to give up the ruse and although it affected her friendships and a budding relationship, it all worked out in the end.
