Squid Games Season 2: Lee Joo-Sil’s Character Explained

The recent death of South Korean actress Lee Joo-sil, known for her role in Squid Game Season 2, has shocked the industry and entertainment world. Joo-sil was 81 at the time of her demise, which was caused by stomach cancer. She had been diagnosed with the disease for three months. Joo-sil was also once diagnosed with breast cancer for a decade.

So, who did Lee Joo-sil play in Season 2 of Squid Game? Here are all the details.

Here’s who the late Lee Joo-Sil portrayed in Squid Games Season 2

Lee Joo-sil played Park Mal Soon in Squid Game Season 2.

In the series, Park Mal Soon is the mother of Hwang Joon-ho, one of the series’ central characters. She is also the stepmother of Hwang In-ho, aka Front Man.

Park Mal Soon plays a supporting role in which she is shown with a kind and nurturing but sad disposition. She loves both her biological son and her stepson. Her love for her stepson is to such an extent that she is saddened by In-ho having departed their home following the demise of his wife.

Her love is also evident in her worries and fears that In-ho resents her because of the death of his wife from liver failure, his perceptions that Jun-ho was her favorite because he was her biological son, and her and In-ho’s lack of interaction for many years. Jun-ho had promised his mother that he would find In-ho.

It’s unclear if Park Mal Soon knows that In-ho is the Squid Games’ Front Man.

Outside Squid Game, Joo-sil was known for her roles in many other notable projects like The Uncanny Counter, Commitment, and Train to Busan. She launched her acting career in 1964, appearing in stage productions like Macbeth and Death of a Salesman. In 2023, she was awarded the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Wildflower Film Festival.
