Dwyane Wade gives health update

Dwyane Wade recently talked up about his cancer diagnosis and surgery during the January 30 episode of his podcast The Why With Dwyane Wade. He revealed that he had a cancerous tumor removed from his right kidney on Dec. 18, 2023. Wade shared that he had been putting off a routine physical exam. However, health concerns, including stomach discomfort and urinary issues, prompted him to see a doctor. During the checkup, a tumor was discovered on his kidney. After the tumor was found to be too risky for a biopsy, Wade underwent surgery to remove 40% of his kidney.

The former NBA star had been putting off regular checkups since retiring in 2019. He was shocked to learn that the tumor was cancerous. Wade admitted that the experience was one of the weakest moments of his life, as it was the first time his family saw him vulnerable. He said, “My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak.” Despite the emotional toll, he found strength in the support of his loved ones, especially his wife, Gabrielle Union, and their children.

Wade, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023, had been retired from basketball since 2019. In the years following his career, he has remained active in entertainment production, broadcasting, and podcasting. Wade also became a partial owner of the Utah Jazz.
