Ryan Whyte Maloney, best known for his time on The Voice, died at the age of 44.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office in Las Vegas confirmed the news, revealing that Maloney’s cause of death was suicide. The official report states that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities pronounced him dead at 2:50 a.m. on Tuesday, January 28. (via People)

Just hours before his passing, Maloney shared an Instagram story. There he appeared to be in good spirits while attending a private event at Nine Fine Irishmen, a bar in Las Vegas. In the clip, Whyte Maloney looked content, making his death even more shocking for fans.

Born in 1981, Maloney displayed musical talent from a young age. He mastered multiple instruments, including cello, guitar, violin, and even drums, before establishing his career. He first gained recognition as the frontman of the progressive rock band Indulge. However, later, he transitioned into a solo artist. He released his first album Where I’ve Been, with the help of a renowned producer Sean O’Dwyer.

Maloney tried out for The Voice in 2014, where he sang “Lights” by Journey at the audition. His powerful performance earned a rare four-chair turn, and he ultimately chose to join Blake Shelton’s team. During his time on the show, he sang four hit singles, further establishing himself in the music industry. Following his success on The Voice, Maloney reportedly worked as a songwriter, studio musician, and producer.
