Martin Luther King’s Daughter Bernice & Sexyy Red AI Photo Controversy Explained

Martin Luther King’s daughter, Bernice King, recently slammed rapper Sexyy Red for posting an AI-generated image of her and Martin on MLK Day. Although Red later apologized for it, many users on social media also criticized her for the post. Here is all the information about what happened between Bernice and Sexyy Red.

What happened to Bernice King and Sexyy Red?

On Monday, January 15, which is celebrated as Martin Luther King Jr Day, rapper Sexyy Red decided to pay tribute to the late American activist like many across the country. She posted an AI-generated image of herself with MLK, in which she can be seen holding hands with the late civil rights icon.

However, this image didn’t sit well with Martin Luther King Jr’s daughter, Bernice King. She took to X (formerly Twitter) and urged Red to delete the post. She labeled the fake image “intentionally distasteful, dishonoring, deplorable, and disrespectful to my family and my father” in her post. However, Bernice King later clarified to her followers that her intentions weren’t to disrespect Red but to call out the image she posted.

She asserted in another post, “I don’t believe Sexyy Red to be a ‘degenerate,’ ‘ghetto,’ or ‘trash.’ I have spoken out in the past about the use of and comparison to either of my parents to denigrate other people. I just don’t understand this type of use of my father’s image (on #MLKDay, no less), in a way that does not convey what we know to be true about his service and sacrifice.”

Many other users on the platform came forward in support of Bernice King’s remarks. Many of Red’s fans also gave their thoughts on the image. Within a few hours, Red posted on X and apologized to Bernice King for the AI image. She wrote, “You ain’t wrong, never meant to disrespect your family my apologies. Just reposted something I saw that I thought was innocent.” Additionally, the rapper also removed the post from X.

Following this, Martin Luther King Jr’s daughter, Bernice King made another post. In it, she accepted Red’s apology and stated “Thank you for your apology. Please know that it was not my intention that you be denigrated. I value you as a human being.”
