The popular TV personality mentioned that her childhood trauma caused her to feel “disgusted” whenever she met decent people who treated her nicely. Cheryl Burke added that she felt she didn’t deserve the kindness, as she had adjusted to the mistreatment. She also associated feelings she experienced as a child, claiming “it was all I knew.”
Furthermore, the trauma was the reason the Dance Moms star chose to be single. “It was so foreign to me, it was like it gave me the ick,” Burke said in an appearance on the Oldish podcast. Addressing how her painful experiences affected her dance career, Burke stated, “I remember feeling so disgusted when I would have a nice dance partner, let’s say, who would treat me with respect.”
In the podcast, Cheryl Burke also spoke about how the lack of a father figure made her gravitate towards men who were not good for her. She further talked about how she had allowed negative people in her life because of other traumas. This included seeing her father’s intimacy with another woman, despite his separation from her mother.
Additionally, Burke opened up about the difficult time she had testified against her caretaker, who molested both her and her step-sister at the young age of 9. She noted that it was because of her sister’s best friend’s actions that her caretaker got sentenced. Here, Burke also expressed her belief that she had been “gaslighting herself” at the time. The dancer and model even shared how the court did not allow her mother to accompany her during the trial.
Cheryl Burke commenced a celibacy journey following her separation from Matthew Lawrence in 2022. She celebrated three years of this journey last year via an Instagram post.
