Mayfair Witches: How Did Deirdre Mayfair Die?

With Mayfair Witches Season 2 now airing, fans seem to have a reinvigorated desire in knowing about the culprit who killed Annabeth Gish’s Deirdre. What follows is a chaotic turn of events where Rowan learns what it is to be a witch, all the while dealing with new twists and turns, including the unexpected murder of her mother. But who was responsible for executing Deirdre in Mayfair Witches Season 1?

Here’s everything you need to know regarding the cold-blooded murder of Gish’s character.

WARNING: Spoilers below!

Deirdre’s murder in Mayfair Witches explained

In deep contrast to what fans were expecting, Deirdre dies by the hands of a human assassin in Mayfair Witches Season 1 Episode 4, “Curiouser and Curiouser.”

In the episode, viewers discover the lifeless body of Deirdre in an elevator with her throat slit. Everyone instantly suspects this to be the work of the devilous Lasher. However, Ciprien Grieve’s investigation soon reveals that it was a hired murderer who ended Deirdre’s life. Through his clairvoyant abilities, Grieve also discovers that the killer is a hardened professional.

This development deflects the blame of Deirdre’s killing in Mayfair Witches to Carlotta Mayfair, who had been keeping Rowan’s mother captive for a prolonged period. The debut season also showcased Carlotta’s wicked determination to neutralize Lasher, which enabled her to commit arson and even make an attempt on Rowan’s life.

Nevertheless, in an unexpected twist, fans find out towards the conclusion of Mayfair Witches Season 1 that it was actually Cortland Mayfair who ordered the killing of Deirdre. In Anne Rice’s Lives of the Mayfair Witches novel trilogy, which serves as the inspiration for the series, Cortland is showcased as a compassionate character who is possessed by Lasher. However, the small screen adaptation of the books changes things completely by positioning Cortland as a true antagonist.

Despite his best efforts, Rowan is ultimately able to contain Cortland in the Season 1 finale by encasing him in stone. With the new patriarch of the Mayfair family possessing the boon of immortality, it is highly likely that Cortland will return in some capacity to exact revenge on Rowan in the ongoing season, or future installments of Mayfair Witches.
