Whoopi Goldberg has spoken out in support of Carrie Underwood. It comes after backlash over the singer’s announcement that she will perform “America the Beautiful” at Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. While Goldberg has long been critical of Trump, she defended Underwood’s right to make her own choices during an episode of The View.

Goldberg said, “People do what they do for whatever reason…If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform some place, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support.” However, she said that she would not be watching the inauguration or the performance. (via Entertainment Weekly)

Sunny Hostin, Goldberg’s co-host, also supported Underwood’s autonomy as an artist. “I think art is art and you have a right to perform where you want to perform,” she said, adding that she had no plans to watch the event herself. Hostin jokingly mentioned she had “scheduled a spa day” instead.

Panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin pointed out the risks of canceling artists over political affiliations. Griffin said, “If you have a problem, you register your complaint by not downloading her songs and not going to her shows.” She also noted that Underwood’s choice might boost her popularity among MAGA supporters.

In a statement announcing her performance, Underwood expressed her honor to perform. The artist said, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.”
