The Jerry Springer Show: Why It Got Canceled

Fans have long speculated about why The Jerry Springer Show was canceled after 27 seasons. As Jerry Springer’s new docuseries Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action gains attention, viewers can’t help but wonder what led to the end of his iconic and controversial talk show. So, why didn’t The Jerry Springer Show return for Season 28?

Here’s everything you need to know about the show’s cancellation.

Here’s how The Jerry Springer Show got canceled after Season 27

NBC Universal halted production on The Jerry Springer Show after its 27th season, but no official reason for the cancellation has been disclosed.

The reality show aired its first episode on September 30, 1991, and lasted for 27 seasons. Jerry Springer Show also grew popular among the modern audience, who were expecting additional installments of the talk show. However, things took an awkward turn when the show stopped airing new episodes in June 2018. According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC Universal, sent an order to halt the production of fresh episodes. Thus, the show aired its final episode on July 26, 2018.

Further, The CW received the rights for reruns of old episodes, which maintained the show’s hype among the audience. It is also reported that The CW held the rights to numerous unaired episodes, but they eventually never made it to the screens (via ScreenRant). Further, the network stopped airing the rerun after 2021, while The CW Plus stopped carrying it until 2024. Thus, The Jerry Springer Show was canceled with no update from NBC Universal.

However, neither the makers, channel, nor host ever disclosed the reason behind the cancellation. It is possible that the show fell short on the ratings chart due to the beginning of the streaming era.

Further, host Jerry Springer was approached for NBC’s new show, Judge Jerry, when he was planning to retire. The show ran for three seasons and was canceled in 2022. Jerry Springer made his last TV appearance on The Masked Singer Season 8 as he passed away on April 27, 2023.
