Chicago Fire Season 13 returned tonight after the holiday break, and the winter premiere, aka Episode 9, is as explosive as the fans could have hoped. The story predominantly focuses on Joe Minoso’s Joe Cruz, who faces blackmail and life-threatening circumstances as his past comes to haunt him.
Here is what happens to Joe Cruz in Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 9.
Joe Cruz’s fate in Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 9 explained
Joe Cruz gets shot but survives in Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 9. Cruz has a complicated past. Some time ago, he encountered a gangster named Flaco (Jose Antonio Garcia), the leader of the Insane Kings. Cruz’s brother was part of the gang. Flaco tried to stop Cruz’s brother from leaving that violent life. This led to Cruz leaving Flaco to die in a burning building.
In the fall finale, Cruz meets Junior Polanco (Richard Cabral), Flaco’s cousin. Junior witnessed the firefighter’s indiscretion and now tries to force him to commit a crime. Things have changed a lot since the incident with Flaco. Cruz now has a family, and Junior threatens them to force Cruz’s compliance.
Cruz discovers that the latter has approached the Office of Fire Investigation to request another look into his cousin’s death. After reluctantly agreeing to help Junior retrieve the money he had hidden away before going to prison, Cruz has the other man dressed in firefighter gear. He briefly tries to rebel against his blackmailer, prompting Junior to brandish his gun at him.
Junior and Cruz find their way into the property where the money is supposedly hidden and are confronted by people who once worked with the former. A gunfight follows, and Cruz gets hit in the arm. He manages to rush out and get into his car, leaving behind all kinds of traces of his presence behind. This is where the episode ends, with things looking quite bleak for Cruz.
