Missing You: The Meaning of Book & Netflix Series Title Explained

Harlan Coben’s newest series Missing You, based on his book of the same name, has just premiered on Netflix, and fans have been wondering why the series has that title. The story follows a detective who comes across her ex-fiance on a dating app. She learns of his connection to a criminal conspiracy, prompting her to solve the case and track him down, eager to get answers for why he abandoned her years ago.

So, here is the reason why the series and the book are titled Missing You.

Here’s why Harlan Coben’s book and the Netflix series are titled Missing You

The Missing You title in both the Netflix series and the book it adapts comes from John Waite’s 1980s single of the same name.

This was confirmed by Harlan Coben himself in a reply to a 2014 Facebook post by John Waite, who had congratulated Coben on the book’s release. “Yes, the title MISSING YOU came from John Waite’s song. It also plays a role in the plot,” Coben replied.

In the series, “Missing You” is used as Kat and Josh’s special song as well. They sang this song together at karaoke at their engagement party. Moreover, the title also represents Kat’s story arc. This arc involves Kat missing her beau Josh and her late father Clint, who was murdered.

Coben further elaborated on the title of the Netflix series and the book at a London screening for the series. “I thought of the song right away,” Coben said, as per The Hollywood Reporter. He also mentioned that he and Waite attended several events together at the time of the book’s release. Coben added that Waite sent him emails after becoming aware of the series. He further stated that Waite showed him other versions of the song as well.

“I just thought that song was perfect. It worked as a title,” Coben opined, adding, “It worked as a meaning.” The author revealed that the song was “one of the first things” he thought of while writing the book.
