Shakira talks about Chris Martin
In a new interview, Shakira opened up about the support she received from Coldplay’s Chris Martin following her split from Gerard Pique in 2022. When describing her pain after their 11-year relationship ended, she revealed how Martin checked in on her daily, offering encouragement and wisdom during her most difficult moments. Shakira spoke highly of Martin’s empathetic nature.
She said, “He was there for me when I got separated and was heartbroken. He was checking in every day to see how I was doing, sending me words of support and strength and wisdom.” The Waka Waka singer further added, “I see him as a person who sees life through a different lens, who’s sensitive to other people’s needs and very empathetic, very empathetic.” (via Rolling Stone)
The breakup with Pique left Shakira struggling emotionally. She recalled feeling an “almost physical pain” following the separation. The intensity of this grief made it difficult for her to function at times as she processed the end of a relationship that had been central to her life for over a decade.
Shakira also touched on the role her music played in her healing process. Writing for her album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore) helped her with the pain, though she acknowledged that healing isn’t straightforward.
While Shakira has never officially gotten married, she was in another long-term relationship before meeting Pique in 2011. From 1999 to 2009, she dated Argentine lawyer Antonio de la Rúa.
