Smokey Robinson and Frances Gladney first crossed paths in Los Angeles and the two remained friends for long. During one of their hangouts with friends, the duo felt drawn towards each other after bonding over their new interest in coconut shrimp.

In a 2023 interview with Pittsburgh Quarterly, Robinson opened up on this interesting meeting. The singer said, ”Frances and I were on the phone laughing and talking about our birthday party, when I said, ‘Hey, let’s go get some coconut shrimp,’ Sure,’ she said. That was the beginning for us, and I tell her all the time, ‘You do realize that I married you because of coconut shrimp.”’

The couple secretly tied the knot in May 2002 and have been inseparable since then.
