Gerry Turner, the star of The Golden Bachelor, has shared the heartbreaking diagnosis of Waldenström macroglobulinemia, an incurable form of bone marrow cancer.
The 72-year-old Turner shared the news in an interview with People. He explained that he discovered his condition after visiting an orthopedic surgeon for an old shoulder injury. During the examination, his orthopedic surgeon noticed unusual blood markers. This led to further testing and eventually a referral to an oncologist.
Turner’s condition, which involves the gradual buildup of cancerous cells in the bone marrow, has profoundly impacted his personal life. In the same interview, he opened up about how this diagnosis contributed to his decision to divorce his wife, Theresa Nist, just three months after their televised wedding. He said, “I wanted my life to continue on as normal as possible, and that led me to believing that as normal as possible more meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two son-in-laws, my granddaughters. And the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority.”
Though Nist has stated that Turner’s illness wasn’t a factor in their separation, Turner hopes that sharing his story will help others understand the pressures and difficult decisions he faced during this challenging time. Despite the grim nature of his diagnosis, Turner is determined to embrace life to the fullest. Turner said, “I’m going to pack as much fun as I possibly can into my life and enjoy every moment. And when I’m gone, I’m gone, but I’m not going to have regrets.”
