Ryne Sandberg Confirms His Cancer Has Relapsed

Former Chicago Cubs player Ryne Sandberg recently took to social media to share a devastating update regarding his health with his fans. The ex-MLB second baseman first shocked the sporting world in January 2024 when he revealed that he was suffering from metastatic prostate cancer. Sandberg soon received his cancer-free clearance in August after undergoing extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment sessions. However, his illness seems to have returned in an even bigger capacity now, as disclosed by the retired sportsman himself.

Ryne Sandberg provides a health update in recent statement

The National Baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg recorded in his latest Instagram post that his prostate cancer has returned, much to the dismay of his fans. Sandberg also conveyed that the ailment has now spread to more of his organs and will require another stretch of “intensive treatment.”

While talking about his current health, Ryne Sandberg stated, “I want to share an update on my prostate cancer. Unfortunately we recently learned the cancer has relapsed and it has spread to other organs. This means that I’m back to more intensive treatment. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family.”

Prior to his retirement in 1997, Ryne Sandberg participated in 16 seasons at the MLB, of which, a whopping 15 of them were with the Chicago Cubs. In his prolonged and illustrious playing career, Sandberg managed to win nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards and seven Silver Sluggers, all the while making 10 All-Star appearances on the trot.

Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts forwarded his support to Ryne Sandberg in a statement, saying, “Ryne is an inspiration to cancer survivors everywhere. I know all Cubs fans join my family and me in sending positive thoughts to Ryne and keeping him and his family in our prayers as he faces this next round of treatments to defeat cancer.”
