Richard Gere flips off Savannah Guthrie on Today show

In an appearance on the Today Show while promoting his new political thriller series The Agency, Richard Gere gave the middle finger to Savannah Guthrie, who appeared shocked by the gesture. “What did you just do?,” Guthrie asked Gere. “You just did an obscene gesture on this family morning show.” Gere’s middle finger gesture was censored.

The Pretty Woman star immediately apologized. This was followed by Guthrie saying “I’m bleeping you” and playfully blocking Gere’s hand movements. He later claimed that he did that gesture in the clip from the series the Today Show showcased. The clip stopped playing just before Gere showed the middle finger. He added that the clip “didn’t make any sense” without showing the shot of him giving the middle finger.

Guthrie reminded Gere of Cher giving an “f-bomb” when she’d appeared on the show the previous day. Cher did an interview with host Hoda Kotb, where she opened up about her past troubled marriage with Sonny Bono and the advice comedian Lucille Ball had given her.

Gere and Guthrie then discussed The Agency series, with Gere confirming that he had not seen anything from the show. He also explained the show’s premise and said it has a wonderful cast.

The Agency is scheduled to premiere on Showtime on December 1, 2024. Besides Gere, Fassbender, West, and Bonneville, the series also stars Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, and John Magaro.
