Josh Brolin speaks about the impact of his stepmom Barbra Streisand

Josh Brolin said that his stepmom Barbra Streisand helped him stay sober and that he appreciated her blunt nature.

“I mean we argued for years, you know because she was very straightforward,” Brolin told Howard Stern in an appearance on his show, recalling the time Streisand refused to give him wine. The Outer Range actor added that Streisand reminded him of a “much more healthy version” of his late mother, Jane Cameron Agee.

Brolin further mentioned that he loved Streisand’s “level of honesty.” He added that she was like a “typical Jewish mother” who told him he could not do things that would prove detrimental to his health, like drinking alcohol, and that he had to eat properly because according to her he had looked “too skinny.”

The Dune star then admitted that he had taken a long time to understand Streisand’s blunt nature, which he has now fully appreciated and accepted.

Streisand married Josh Brolin’s father, actor James Brolin in 1998.

Brolin reportedly struggled with an alcohol addiction and substance abuse problems, during his youth. This is one of the subjects of his new memoir, From Under the Truck, where he also addresses major events in his life, like his childhood in a Paso Robles ranch in California, his time in Hollywood, and his mother’s tragic death.

Brolin revealed in the memoir that he had gotten sober in 2013. This was after he visited his 99-year-old grandmother on her deathbed, after a night of drinking, and realized that he had a long life to live. (via The Times)
