Here’s When Daylight Saving Time Ends in the US in 2024

The end date for Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the United States is nearing now that fall 2024 is officially afoot. The time change occurs twice every year with DST concluding soon as the temperature falls across various regions and the days become shorter and nights longer. This change is allowing people to fall back an hour and gain more daylight. Nonetheless, this time alteration comes with its own issues as it can interrupt the routines of children and pets.

Daylight Saving Time (DST): When and what time does it end?

The end date for Daylight Saving Time (DST) for 2024 is Sunday, November 3, at 2 a.m. local time. Moreover, it will resume next year on Sunday, March 9, as the weather gets warmer.

To further explain, DST takes place between the months of March and November when the days are longer and nights are shorter. During this span, which is usually the summer months, Americans set their clocks an hour ahead by one hour. Then, during the winter months, which starts in November and ends in March, they reset the time an hour back to standard time. This enables people to add more daylight to their evenings.

For 2024, Daylight Saving Time started on Sunday, March 10, at 2 a.m. local time. While this change in time motivated people to start the day an hour ahead and transformed the lives of the majority of Americans, many remained unaffected.

The DST cycle has continued year after year and in 2022, the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act to make it permanent. Despite the Senate’s unanimous decision to constitute this act as a federal law, the U.S. House of Representatives did not pass it. It also lacked President Joe Biden’s signature.

Moreover, certain states and territories, such as Hawaii, parts of Arizona, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands don’t follow Daylight Saving Time. The majority of these territories are located close to the equator and witness little variation in their daylight hours throughout the year.
