Update: Nintendo has clarified that Chrom is not actually playable; he appears to be part of Robin’s Final Smash. Original article follows.
In a livestream on its official site this morning, Nintendo revealed not one, not two, but four characters who will join the fray in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. As expected, Captain Falcon will make his return from previous games, while Fire Emblem newcomers Lucina, Chrom, and Robin (the player avatar in Fire Emblem Awakening) will all join the roster as playable fighters.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise, as the new Super Smash Bros. already includes both Marth and Ike of the Fire Emblem series. For this reason, and because the game already contains so many playable swordsman, some fans and experts theorized that Chrom (and Lucina in particular) would be left out entirely. I expect Mr. Sakurai is giggling with glee at Nintendo HQ right about now.

The reveal was carried out in Fire Emblem‘s signature, stylized CGI fashion, and shows Lucina facing off against a particularly riled Captain Falcon. While Lucina and Chrom apear to have access to a bevvy of standard sword abilities (we’ll likely be given more details later), Robin’s moveset is especially interesting. With access to the Fire Emblem series’ many magical tomes, it appears he’ll have lightning, wind, and fire attacks at his disposal, as well as the health-restoring Nosferatu for recovery purposes. Notably, you can also play as the female Robin if you so choose, and each tome has a limited number of uses per battle.
Check out the reveal above, and get excited! We’re now less than three months away from the release of the 3DS edition. Fire Emblem is my favorite series of all time, so I’m not even sure if I’m actually awake right now.
