Sony is Encouraging Studios to ‘Refocus and Refine’

If you’re a PS4 owner, you’re probably wondering where all the exclusives are. The truth is, a great game takes a long time to make, and Sony’s push to ensure that first-party games are delivered without compromise has left the first year a bit bare.

Speaking about recent layoffs at SCEE, industry insider Ahsan Rasheed shared the following via Twitter:

Sony is very serious about first party efforts. Studios are encouraged to refocus, hone in, and refine. It just sucks people go.

inFamous: Second Son could have easily been pushed as a launch title, but an agreement between Sucker Punch Productions and Sony to wait until March paid off. The game has become an incredible demonstration of the PS4’s power, and has added a heavy hitter to the PS4’s exclusive lineup.

Driveclub has been delayed nearly a full year after initially being targeted as a PS4 launch window title. Although we haven’t seen what the extra development time has done for the title, it’s safe to assume that it not only looks but plays better than it would have.

If there’s one thing developers should have learned from last generation it’s that rushing a product is a formula for disaster. Taking the time to play test a game to make sure that it’s as fun to play and polished as possible is always worth the extra effort.
