Christmas is here. While that should mean it’s time to enjoy new hardware and/or games, for some it’s a cause for frustration.
Just like we saw during the PS4’s launch week, PSN is currently struggling to host the flood of new console owners. Users have reported that error code 80710092 pops up when trying to connect to PSN on any PlayStation platform. This makes it impossible to update games, play them online, or enjoy the virtual fireplace on Netflix.
On the Xbox side of things, it appears Microsoft weren’t able to correct the disc read error issues in time for Christmas day. Many new Xbox One owners are saying that their disc drive won’t read media of any kind, making it only possible to play games and enjoy entertainment from digitally-downloaded sources.
In the case of the PS4, Sony now require payment to play online (PS Plus). They don’t have the excuse of years past where they can point to PSN’s cost-free nature. Having routine outages during high-stress periods is frustrating and made worse when you’re paying to use the service.
Similarly, Microsoft need to get their hardware in-check. Red Ring of Death was a catastrophe, and now early adopters of their next-gen console are having to, once again, send their hardware in for replacement.
If you’ve been affected by either of these, you have our condolences. PSN should be A-OK soon, but you’ll have to contact Microsoft support to replace your Xbox One.
