Uber Sacks Driver For Blasting Homophobic Threats At Melbourne Couple

Many of us started this dreary week with the even more dreary news that an innocent couple, minding their own business, had been verbally abused by their Uber driver. Now, unlike the Game Of Thrones episode you’re soon to be watching, justice has been sudden and effective.

For those who are yet to catch up Melbourne couple Lucy Thomas and Chelsea Lang copped a wildly uncalled for and highly homophobic barrage from an Uber driver this weekend. The couple managed to record part of the exchange, which shows almost too clearly just how abusive old mate was.

Now, Uber has confirmed that said old mate has been given the flick. It seems that the ride-sharing service contacted the pair via Twitter. In a statement provided to Mashable, Uber laid it out clearly:

“Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have been in contact [with] this rider to offer our support. As soon as we were made aware of this incident, we removed the driver from the platform.”

As well as the horrific recording where the driver straight up admits to being a bigot and in fact seems proud of it, Thomas and Lang explained the context:

“During an Uber ride home with my gf, our driver started calling us faggots after we asked him not to use the word faggot. He realised we’re in a same-sex relationship & became physically threatening & aggressive. I found courage to stand up to him & record response. By then he’d already said much more. He then sat watching us go inside my house. Reported to Über, but won’t be given an outcome “to protect his privacy”

Uber wasted no time reaching the couple upon learning of their ill-fated journey.
