We’re all going to need an anger translator after hearing this news: Key and Peele are ending their self-titled Comedy Central series when the current fifth season wraps in September.
While speaking to The Wrap, Keegan-Michael Key said “This is our final season – and it’s not because of Comedy Central, it’s us. It was just time for us to explore other things, together and apart. I compare it to Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. We might make a movie and then do our own thing for three years and then come back and do another movie. I’m thinking we could do that every three years – take a year, go bang out a movie. That’s the plan right now.”
Key and his creative partner, Jordan Peele spent six seasons working together on Fox’s MadTV. In 2012, the duo launched Key and Peele on Comedy Central and quickly became two of the network’s most popular stars. Key and Peele even had a fan in President Obama, who invited Key to reprise his role as Obama’s Anger Translator, Luther at this year’s White House Press Correspondents dinner.
As Key alluded to earlier, his partnership with Peele isn’t ending. The duo will next appear together in a comedy film called Keanu, which Peele co-wrote. Afterwards, Peele is slated to write and direct a horror film while Key takes on a role in a different movie filming in New York. The duo will also reteam for a reboot of Police Academy, and they might even produce another show for Comedy Central.
“There’s a TV show in the works that me might do for Comedy Central,” said Key. “There’s lots of stuff we have cooking up.”
