Tennis Australia has issued a public apology after publishing a media release which said that Aussie tennis players Bernard Tomic and John-Patrick Smith were to play at the “Hall of Shame” Tennis Championships in the US, instead of the “Hall of Fame” Tennis Championships.
Soon after the typo made the rounds on social media, Tennis Australia released its apology, saying, “Tennis Australia sincerely apologises for the typo in the daily results service today. This has now been corrected and we wish both Bernard Tomic and JP Smith all the best in the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport.
“This unfortunate error has been widely circulated on social media and there is some discussion as to how such a mistake could occur. We have a very upset staff member who made a simple clerical error.”
Tennis Australia has said the result listing it had issued for the Sharm El Sheikh event in Egypt — which was listed before the Hall of Fame Championships — “should provide some explanation as to how this error occurred. There was no malicious intent”.
Tennis Australia’s slip-up comes after Tomic was stood down from the Davis Cup quarter-final against Kazakhstan for what the organsiation called “disparaging and disrespectful comments”.
Tomic had criticised Tennis Australia officials for supposedly abandoning him as he underwent double hip surgery last year, and for not controlling player funding budgets to his liking.
