Alien: Isolation 2 Could Be in Trouble After SEGA Brands Sales of the Original “Disappointing”

Despite the majority believing that Alien: Isolation was a success with its 2.11 million sales, SEGA has stated that the company is disappointed in the amount of units the game shifted, along with the tepid numbers pulled in by Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, even though the company’s sales of packaged games have risen by 41% year-on-year.

SEGA’s thoughts on the companies earnings across the past financial year were made following the revelation that they had managed 12.3 million sales over the course of the past 12 months, though Alien: Isolation somehow found itself lumped in with Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, which sold a combined 620,000 units, despite it being one of the most praised games of 2014 and achieving sales that, considering it followed the woeful Aliens: Colonial Marines, should have been worthy of praise for the company.

With developers The Creative Assembly previously saying that they were brainstorming a sequel, SEGA’s warped view on the figures Alien: Isolation needed to achieve in order to be deemed a success may stand to impede an Alien: Isolation 2 ever being created.

With Alien: Isolation being the last Alien game which SEGA held the rights to, the publisher coming out and saying that it pulled in “weak” numbers may mean that FOX will decide to not give them another shut at publishing another game based upon the movie license, and instead look to shop the rights to another company. With SEGA focusing upon free-to-play mobile and PC games in the future, it’s not difficult to envisage this being the case, nor is it hard to imagine the next Alien game not being Isolation 2.

Though Alien: Isolation wasn’t exactly roundly praised, there were plenty (myself included) that loved its respectful take on the Alien universe, and its departure away from the action-heavy Alien games that had been released before it. The Creative Assembly made the Alien terrifying once again, and for them to not be given another shot at venturing into the Alien universe once again would be disheartening.
