One of the 1990s’ most enduring movies is set to hit the Broadway stage – and one of Australia’s funniest songwriters will be writing the music.
After months of rumours, The Wall Street Journal reports that a Broadway adaptation of the classic 1993 comedy Groundhog Day will premiere on March 9, 2017, with Tim Minchin composing and writing the music and lyrics.
For those who haven’t seen it (and you really should have), the original Groundhog Day starred Bill Murray as Phil Connors, an arrogant weatherman, who, while covering the annual Groundhog Day celebrations in Punxsutawney, Pensylvania, is forced to re-live it – over, and over, and over. The film also stars Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott.
While no cast has been announced (please, Bill, say yes!), Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the original script, will write the adaptation, along with the team that brought Roald Dahl’s Matilda to the stage, including music and lyrics by Minchin.
In a blog post about the project, Minchin said that the stage version will be “both instantly recognisable, and utterly different.”
