Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn — known for his roles in Animal Kingdom and The Dark Knight Rises — appears to be in the running for a lead role in the forthcoming Star Wars spinoff Rogue One.
The now-Disney-owned Star Wars franchise is developing Episode VII: The Force Awakens for release this December, but Rogue One is already in the pre-production phase and starting to fill up its cast list.
English actor Felicity Jones is already confirmed for a lead role, and our own Ben Mendelsohn is reportedly “circling” the opposing lead role, according to Deadline.
Monsters and Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will direct Rogue One, whose plot will take place separately from the main Star Wars series. Episode VII is set to drop this December, with Rogue One to follow later. Rian Johnson’s Episode VIII will follow, before Josh Trank’s standalone spin-off arrives.
