For a man who once said he was getting out of movies, Kevin Smith has quite a busy docket of upcoming projects.
On Thursday, March 12th, Smith Tweeted that he would be shooting Clerks III in May, followed by his long-awaited Hit Somebody, followed by Moose Jaws (presumably another Canadian comedy). After that, he simply and cryptically announced that he “smells a rat.” Smith went on to confirm that he was indeed alluding to a sequel to Mallrats, his fan-beloved but critically panned 1995 comedy. Smith had planned on retiring after Clerks III, but working on Tusk got his creative juices flowing again. He now seems to be back in the game. Smith has said in a radio interview that Mallrats 2 is “half scripted.”
Check Out: The Best Kevin Smith Movie Ever
Mallrats is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. It was Smith’s relatively big-budget follow-up to his indie darling Clerks, and was a bomb upon its initial release. It has since grown up a following on home video, and some Gen-Xers have come to feel that it’s one of the better comedies of the 1990s. There is no word as to what Mallrats 2 will be about, or who will be in it, but we can perhaps safely assume that Jay and Silent Bob will appear in supporting roles, and that Jason Lee will return as the irascible Brodie.
Snooch to the nooch.
