Matt Fraction & Kelly Sue DeConnick Bring Sex Criminals To TV

As part of the resurgence of Image Comics, married comic book writers Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick have both used their work for Marvel Comics to promote new creator owned comics to an expanded audience. Now the celebrated duo are coming to television.

According to Deadline, Fraction and DeConnick have signed a two year overall deal with Universal TV that will allow them to adapt their own comic books for television in addition to original concepts created specifically for TV. First up will be Sex Criminals, a crime comedy comic book series by Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky that follows a man and a woman who discover that they have the ability to stop time while having sex. Afterwards, they use their abilities to go on a crime spree.

As part of their pact with Universal TV, Fraction and DeConnick will also set up a production company called Milkfed Criminal Masterminds which will also reportedly be used as “ a TV launchpad for other comic creators’ IP.”

In a statement, Universal TV Executive Vice President Bela Bajaria said “We’re always excited to usher in fresh voices to the television space, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Matt and Kelly Sue, a fantastic pair whose award-winning comics are as deeply realized as they are entertaining.”

Fraction has previously written an episode of Da Vinci’s Demons, but he is better known for his runs on Uncanny X-Men, Iron Man, The Immortal Iron Fist and Hawkeye in addition to his creator owned comics Casanova, Satellite Sam, Last Of The Independents and Five Fists Of Science.

DeConnick is widely credited for reimagining Ms. Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) as Captain Marvel, which led to the recently announced film by Marvel Studios. DeConnick has also written Avengers Assemble, Ghost and her creator owned comics Bitch Planet and Pretty Deadly.
