Last year, reports emerged that Fox was considering a new “X-Men” TV series based on the Marvel comic book characters and the film franchise that was launched in 2000. Today, Fox officially signaled its interests in that project, but several hurdles remain.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “24” executive producers Evan Katz and Manny Coto are shepherding the new “X-Men” TV project as co-showrunners with Star Trek 3 screenwriters Patrick McKay and JD Payne attached to write the pilot.
However, any deal to bring the X-Men back to TV will have to get the approval of Marvel and its parent company, Disney. Given the numerous reports of acrimony between Fox and Marvel over the new Fantastic Four film, there’s no guarantee that Marvel or Disney will give their blessing to Fox’s latest plans for the X-Men.

While speaking with TV Insider, Fox entertainment co-chairman Gary Newman said “It’s in negotiations. We’re cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with [Marvel[. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative.”
In the early ‘90s, Fox was the home of “X-Men: The Animated Series,” which is widely credited with creating the large fanbase for the first X-Men feature film. Fox also broadcast the pilot episode of the X-Men spinoff, “Generation X.” However, that project did not go to series.
